What is Podiatric Surgery?

Arthritis & Podiatry

Arthritis can be disruptive and disconcerting. The pain and stiffness can make it difficult to perform the daily tasks most people take for granted.

The condition often affects the joints of the feet which make it difficult to stand or walk.

In addition the joints become swollen and deformed which affects the types of shoes sufferers can wear. We are trained to diagnose and effectively treat complications from arthritis via a range of treatments.

Charcot's Arthropathy

Charcot’s arthropathy can affect both people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

In the majority of cases only one foot is affected, however both feet can be affected over a period of years.

Diabetes is usually long standing and diabetic neuropathy is always present and quite severe.

Prevention of further destruction and deformity of the foot at the acute phase is the primary goal of treatment. If treated early Patients can avoid the need for specialist footwear and have a good chance of avoiding ulceration.

Charcot Marie-Tooth-Disease

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a group of inherited conditions that damage the peripheral nerves.

CMT is also known as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN).

Podiatry treatment of CMT is aimed at providing exercises, orthotics, footwear and aids in order to enhance walking and offload high pressure areas that can occur as a result of foot deformity.

Barclays Podiatry are trained to diagnose and  treat Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease via a range of treatments.

Corns & Calluses

Calluses and corns develop in areas where there is excessive pressure and friction being applied to the skin. Common causes include:

  • Wearing socks or shoes that don’t fit properly

  • Thin/fragile and dry skin

  • Foot deformities (e.g. bunions, hammer toes)

  • Feet that are very flat or high in the arch region

  • Feet that roll in or out too much

  • Medical conditions

  • Smoking

Our expert podiatrists can gently remove calluses and corns to have you feeling much better in no time.

Dry Cracked Heels

Dry, cracked heels are commonly caused by walking around barefooted or standing for a long time.

Shoes that don’t fit well or are open in the heel region can also be the culprit.

And, unfortunately, our skin gets less elastic as we get older.

Some medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, underactive thyroid gland), vitamin deficiencies and medications may also cause dry, cracked heels.

We can gently and easily remove the dead skin from your heels and liaise with your doctor  to help create a prevention plan for you to follow.

Fungal Infections

There are many kinds of fungal infection, but a fungal infection of the foot is normally called athlete’s foot, tinea or tinea pedis.

A fungal infection usually makes itself at home between your toes, but can really emerge anywhere on your foot.

You may notice symptoms like:

  • Redness

  • Cracked, peeling or scaly skin

  • White soft or soggy skin

  • Blisters

  • Itchiness  or Burning/stinging

  • An unpleasant smell

Club Foot

Club foot is a birth defect. It becomes evident in a shortening of the tendons on the inner side and rear of the foot. This causes the foot to be permanently twisted inward and upward.

In about half the cases, both feet are affected. If left untreated, the affected person will eventually walk on the outer side of the affected foot or feet.

Clubfoot can be successfully treated with a variety of devices and procedures.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic nerve pain condition that usually affects the arms, legs, hands or feet.

It can occur after injury or trauma and is believed to be caused by damage to, or malfunction of, the nervous system which occurs after an injury, such as a fracture.

Symptoms range from mild to severe, and may last months or years. Most people recover fully with effective treatment.

Diabetes Podiatry

Many diabetics experience problems with their feet so adequate foot care is essential to reduce the risk of complications.

Diabetes can affect your feet in a number of ways if proper care is not taken.

Including reduced nerve sensitivity, poor circulation, increased risk of ulcers, pain and cramps in feet and lower legs, burning, aching, numbness or tingling & increased risk of infections such as tinea and cellulitis.

Foot & Ankle Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints. It can cause pain and stiffness in any joint in the body and is very common in the small joints of the foot and ankle.

There are hundreds of forms of arthritis, many affecting the foot and ankle. All of them can lead to pain and major secondary complications making it difficult to walk and perform activities you enjoy.

Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are many treatment options available to slow the progress of the disease and relieve symptoms.

Foot Drop

Foot drop is a gait abnormality in which the dropping of the forefoot happens due to weakness, irritation or damage to the common fibular nerve.

This can include the sciatic nerve, or paralysis of the muscles in the anterior portion of the lower leg.

It is usually a symptom of a greater problem, not a disease in itself.

Our specialised team at Barclays Podiatry have vast experience in diagnosing and treating Foot Drop and typically this treatment is very successful but involves a multifactorial approach.

Gout

Gout is a painful inflammation of a joint. The big toe is the joint most commonly affected, although the hands, wrists, knees, ankles, elbows or any other joint can be affected.

Gout is the result of a build of waste material called uric acid, which forms tiny crystals in some of the joints of the body. Uric acid is normally found in the blood of all people, and comes from the breakdown of cells, DNA and from the food and drinks we consume each day.

Prompt treatment will help relieve the pain and inflammation of acute gout. People suffering gout should seek our help.

Leg Length Differences And Heel Lifts

Having one leg a bit longer than the other is very common and can lead secondary complications and pain in areas such as the lower back, hip and neck.

Leg length discrepancies can be caused by poor alignment of the pelvis or simply because one leg is structurally longer than the other.

If you have pain in your lower back or lower extremity and a possible length discrepancy; the two symptoms could be related.

Oedema – Hot And Swollen Feet Or Ankles

Swelling in the feet, otherwise referred to as oedema, occurs as a result of a wide range of causes, including the body’s reaction to hot weather, a high salt intake, pregnancy, and the hormones associated with the menstrual cycle.

Fluid retention (oedema) may be caused by many different conditions. Older people can develop oedema, as they sit for long periods of time. They are also more likely to have underlying heart or kidney conditions that may cause oedema.

Pregnancy Podiatry

Due to the natural weight gain during pregnancy, a woman’s center of gravity is completely altered.

This causes a new weight-bearing stance and added pressure to the knees and feet.

Many women may also experience leg cramping and varicose veins due to weight gain. Because of this, it is important for all pregnant women to learn more about foot health during their pregnancy to help make this nine month period more comfortable for them.
